Topic description

This topic provides an introduction to the contemporary arts of Asia, with a focus on the changing rules for the arts as societies respond to new contexts in the region. Whilst independent of Studies of Asia: Arts Learning Area 1, it builds upon the prior application of knowledge and understanding of studies of Asia in the arts curriculum area.

Educational aims

The two major aims of this topic are to enable students to:

  • Increase their knowledge and understanding of studies of the arts of Asia, especially as related to contemporary issues and the likely implications of closer Asia-Australia relationships
  • Apply their knowledge and understanding of studies of Asia to developing effective strategies for the teaching and learning of the arts
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Understand the changing role of the arts of Asia
  2. Evaluate similarities and differences between established and emerging Asian and Australian art forms
  3. Understand how the arts of Asia are responding to contemporary issues
  4. Evaluate issues of continuity and change in the arts of Asia, within and across cultures
  5. Analyse curriculum development issues related to infusing studies of Asia into the arts curriculum
  6. Plan and apply a range of teaching and learning strategies to infuse studies of Asia into the arts curriculum to meet the needs of all students
  7. Use school and state/territory policy and curriculum documents with regard to infusing studies of Asia into the arts curriculum
