ENVS7701 Coastal Management

This topic provides an overview of key coastal issues and management problems facing all coasts and oceans. It briefly details the evolution of, and some of the major processes operating in a wide variety of coastal environments (e.g. oceans, surf zones, beaches, estuaries, dunes, mangroves, seagrasses, coral reefs etc), and then examines the management issues and solutions to the problems facing many of the world's coasts.

This topic aims to:

• Have a raised awareness of the interaction of human activity on the coastal environment and the environmental management implications of this interaction
• Have developed an understanding of the concept of integrated coastal management (ICM)
• Explore how coasts are currently managed (institutional and practical management schemes) in a range of contexts
• Examine current coastal management problems and their associated management strategies

1. Provide a detailed explanation of a significant contemporary coastal management problem relating it to the interaction of the human and natural environment
2. Explain the principles of integrated coastal management
3. Assess coastal management arrangements in specific locations against the principles of integrated coastal management
4. Evaluate the adequacy of the various coastal management arrangements in place in different contexts
