Topic description
This interdisciplinary topic critically appraises various theories that explain the place of discourses of sexuality in historical and contemporary settings. It applies these theories to a variety of contemporary debates and seeks to identify innovative and creative approaches to the representation and theorisation of sexuality. It addresses both Australian and international contexts.
Educational aims
This topic aims to introduce students to a range of contemporary theories and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of sexuality. It requires students to engage with contemporary theory to analyse instances of contemporary sexuality politics.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
- Evaluate a range of current theories about sexuality
- Relate theories about sexuality to the analysis of contemporary issues and debates
- Discuss current public debates about sexuality including an analysis of the various positions in these debates
- Discuss ethically the politics of sexuality
