This is a core specialty topic in the Graduate Certificate in Remote & Indigenous Health (Allied Health). This topic has been a developed in partnership with the Services for Australian Rural and Remote Allied Health (SARRAH).

This topic provides the foundation for Allied Health practice in isolated, remote and Indigenous Primary Health Care contexts. It explores the nature of practice in these contexts, making comparisons and contrasts between metropolitan, rural and remote Allied Health practice settings. A framework for remote Allied Health practice is proposed and students reflect on the role of Allied Health Professional as a visitor and as a resource to rural and remote communities. There is an emphasis on reflective practice and identifying the development needs of rural and remote allied health professionals, taking into account local, national and international trends in interprofessional and community practice.

The aim of this topic is to provide the opportunity for Allied Health professionals to develop a specialist/generalist framework for confidently, competently and reflectively providing Primary Health Care services to people located in isolated, rural, remote and Indigenous communities.

On completion of this topic, students will be able to:

• Outline the unique characteristics of rural, remote and Indigenous Allied Health practice

• Identify the competencies for effective rural and remote Allied Health practice

• Incorporate strategies into own practice consistent with principles of cultural safety and Primary Health Care

• Identify and apply the key components in planning a visit to a remote community including 'codes of conduct' or 'protocols'

• Implement strategies to ensure continuity of care and service provision

• Identify social determinants of health and illness, the needs of individuals, families and communities and develop a plan to work together with them, other health professionals and support networks to implement solutions.

• Tailor own service to support rural and remote and
  Indigenous residents and strengthen existing support networks

• Articulate clinical reasoning and reflexivity which underlies decision making for competent, confident practice
