Topic description
This topic explores recent developments in ecological hermeneutics in relation to biblical texts. It seeks to analyse critically the use of the Bible in ecological discourse and to interpret relevant texts of the Bible - including Genesis 1, Psalms 8, Proverbs 8 and Colossians 1 - from the perspective of justice for the earth.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • introduce current scholarly discussion about key concepts of ecological theology
  • critique and develop appropriate hermeneutical principles for interpreting the biblical texts from an ecojustice perspective
  • analyse a selection of key biblical texts in the light of these hermeneutical principles developed
  • appreciate the significance of such a process for the role of the church in ecological matters
