There are three Commonwealth Assistance Forms:

  • Request for Commonwealth Assistance and HECS-HELP
  • Request for FEE-HELP Assistance
  • Request for SA-HELP

All students offered a Commonwealth supported place must complete a Request for Commonwealth Assistance and HECS-HELP form prior to enrolling in a new course for the first time. This includes permanent residents and New Zealand citizens who are required to pay student contribution amounts upfront, Australian citizens and permanent humanitarian visa holders who intend to pay student contribution amounts upfront, and students commencing an Honours course. Australian citizens and permanent humanitarian visa holders are also eligible to apply for HECS-HELP assistance for all or part of the student contribution amounts but must supply a Tax File Number.

Fee-paying students (subject to eligibility) may apply for FEE-HELP assistance for all or part of the tuition fees. To apply, complete a Request for FEE-HELP Assistance form before, or soon after, enrolment, and no later than the census date.

SA-HELP is a loan scheme that assists eligible students to pay their student services and amenities fee.  Eligible students can choose to defer all or part of their fee for the relevant year. If you wish to defer your student services and amenities fees you must submit a Request for SA-HELP assistance form in addition to any HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP forms you may have already lodged.

International students are not eligible for Commonwealth assistance and do not need to complete a CAF.

Commonwealth supported students

As a Commonwealth supported student when do I complete a CAF?

You must complete the Request for Commonwealth support and HECS-HELP form prior to enrolling in a new course for the first time.

I am commencing a new course - how do I complete my CAF?

Your CAF can be completed on-line by logging onto the Student Information System. Select the 'My Commonwealth Assistance' tab, select your course and click on the 'Complete Form' button next to 'Request for Commonwealth request and HECS-HELP' in the 'Recommended Forms' section.

Many of your details will be included on the form.  Check carefully to ensure the details are correct and amend if necessary.  Complete the form and submit for approval.  CAF approval is immediate for most students but may take up to one working day to process for some.  You will not be able to enrol until approval is received.

If you are enrolling in a combined degree you must complete a CAF for each course.

I am a continuing student - how do I complete my CAF?

If you have already completed a CAF for your current course, you do not need to complete another form.

If you are transferring to a new course in 2015, for example from a Bachelor of Science to a Bachelor of Arts, you will need to complete a CAF for the 'new' course before you enrol.  For most students CAF approval is immediate but may take up to one working day to process for some.

Am I eligible for HECS-HELP assistance?

Australian citizens and permanent humanitarian visa holders may apply for HECS-HELP assistance for all or part of their student contribution amounts.

Permanent residents and New Zealand citizens are not eligible for HECS-HELP assistance and must pay student contribution amounts upfront.

Do I need a Tax File Number to obtain HECS-HELP?

Yes, you must have a tax file number (TFN) to obtain HECS-HELP. You can submit a CAF without a TFN but you must supply the University with the details no later than the census date.  If you need to do this, leave the TFN section blank and select 'Full upfront payment of my student contribution amount' in the last section of the CAF.  Bring evidence of your TFN to Student Finance Services, in the Student Centre, before the census date, and your CAF will be amended.  If you do not supply a TFN by the census date, and you have unpaid student contribution amounts, your enrolment will be cancelled.
