A student may complete a major sequence of 36 units in Law and Society by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), two Year 2 topics (9 units) and two Year 3 topics (9 units) plus two additional topics (9 units) from the Year 2 or Year 3 topics listed in the program of study below.


A student may complete a minor sequence of 22.5 units in Law and Society by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), two Year 2 topics (9 units) plus and additional topic (4.5 units) from the Year 2  or Year 3 Topics listed in the program of study below. Students in the BEd(MSS)BA cannot complete a minor in Law and Society.

Law and Society is not offered as an extended major.

Course aims

This major aims to produce students who understand the role of justice and policy development and application in providing mechanisms for the development of a just and equitable society.  It addresses justice issues in a number of different areas and allows students opportunities to develop skills and an understanding of a range of justice areas, including young people, gender issues, business, health, education, mediation and advocacy.

Learning outcomes

On completing this major in conjunction with their other Bachelor studies students will be able to demonstrate:

  • comprehensive understanding of the way justice systems operate in contemporary societies, both in Australia and internationally
  • well-developed written and verbal communication skills
  • skills as independent learners and workers, as well as skills for group and team work.
