Topic description
This topic is designed to allow investigation of selected areas of instructional psychology. The principal focus of the topic will be on recent literature in the area of cognition and instruction concerned with psychological research into learning that has influenced teaching actions; and research on the effects of specific teaching actions on students' learning.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • foster inquiry as an essential educational practice
  • build up students' knowledge of models of learning and instruction; knowledge of how these models have been applied in instructional settings; and develop their ability to review research literature in the area of learning and instruction
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will be able to:

  • examine contemporary research on the application of cognitive psychology to learning and instruction
  • explain in detail examples of research projects designed to improve students' capabilities.
  • describe and critically evaluate research methodologies used in the broad area of instructional psychology
