Topic description
The language practicals aim to extend the student's knowledge of basic spoken and written standard Indonesian. Special focus will be on developing extensive reading skills and on further exploring morphological and syntactic patterns in that context. Active student participation is required as this topic also aims to enhance speaking skills through role-plays, small group discussions, practical task-based activities and other fun language activities. Assessment is by graded written and oral tests and assignments. There is no end of semester examination.
Educational aims
  • To further develop basic reading skill, using authentic written Indonesian language from newspapers, magazines, poems and short stories
  • To extend speaking skills in short discussions based on the themes or related issues familiar to students as covered in the reading text
  • To expose students to wide range of interesting social themes in contemporary Indonesia and to build students' vocabulary in Indonesian through reading and follow up language activities
  • To expose students to applied grammar by analysing the reading texts through explanation and exercises involving Indonesian grammar
  • To train students to apply the sentence structures and appropriate grammatical points in guided writing exercises
  • To enable students to listen to and get the gist of spoken informal Indonesian language through feature movie clips and short audio and audio visual material.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will be able:
  • To use Indonesian language confidently
  • To use reading, writing, speaking, and listening strategies more effectively
  • To gain a better understanding of the cultural background of Indonesian society and reflect on their own society
  • To develop and analyse more deeply and accurately social issues related to the themes in the reading texts
  • To assimilate 25 new words a week
  • To write a summary and/or commentary, review, and short report of around 350 - 500 words in Indonesian on a familiar topic read or discussed
  • To converse in Indonesian with ease on a personal or basic social level
  • To use correctly the grammatical structures covered in the topic, namely the active and passive voice, imperatives and passives imperatives, and ber- prefix.
