Topic description
This topic is designed to provide students with an internship in a workplace setting. Depending on availability, students may take up an internship with a cultural heritage government agency, consulting firm, non-government organisation or other body involved in the cultural heritage industry. The topic requires students to undertake at least 240 hours work placement and study over a minimum of 12 weeks, keeping a weekly log book of their experiences and undertaking a number of assessment tasks related to the projects on which the internship is based. The total duration will be determined by the industry partner providing the internship opportunity, in consultation with the topic coordinator and the student. As part of this topic students will put their theoretical learning into practice, develop an understanding of the cultural heritage workplace, expand their professional networks and, through these activities, enhance their employment opportunities.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide students with field experience in the working environment of cultural heritage management

  • provide students with training in practical aspects of cultural heritage management

  • provide students with an opportunity to develop a network of cultural heritage professionals

  • further develop skills and knowledge required in the field of cultural heritage management
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the range of tasks that might be undertaken by cultural heritage professionals in the course of their daily professional life

  • demonstrate an enhanced understanding of the skills, knowledge and attitudes of people working in the cultural heritage management field

  • develop a work ethic and level of professionalism appropriate to the field of cultural heritage management

  • develop an empathy with, and understanding of the complex range of issues confronting cultural heritage professionals on a daily basis

  • will be better equipped to enter the workforce as a cultural heritage professional, and to develop and sustain professional relationships with cultural heritage practitioners
