Topic description
This topic examines some of the 'big picture' theoretical concepts in historical archaeology through a combination of documentary and other primary source research. This topic complements ARCH2203 by relating its core practical concepts to wider theoretical issues and has a strong laboratory component in which artefacts and documents will be used to demonstrate key issues of identity, meaning, interpretation and ideology.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • familiarise students with essential historical archaeological research skills based on archival, documentary and oral sources

  • address the theoretical bases for historical archaeology and the range of sites which exist

  • examine the particular strengths of historical archaeology as a sub discipline in understanding past and present human behaviour
  • address the dynamic relationship between historical archaeology, the recent past and people in the present
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • plan and design a major research project

  • source primary material and know the major repositories and categories of primary source material available in South Australia

  • plan and structure a research project, and understand the limitations of both the data and the research process
  • discriminate between primary and secondary source material and critically evaluate the information provided by each
