Topic description
This topic will provide students with a practical introduction to recording Indigenous sites in the field. Survey, mapping, photography and other components of site recording will be covered. The topic will be run in cooperation with appropriate Indigenous representatives. Indigenous participation will ensure that students are exposed to Indigenous methods of site recording, assessment of significance and oral history. Seminars will be presented during the field school, exploring Indigenous culture, archaeology and connection with land.

Fees will be charged to cover such things as transport, accommodation and food based on field trip location.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • develop the practical and personal skills necessary to conduct field research with Indigenous peoples

  • offer practical experience in working with Indigenous communities

  • develop students' recording skills used in Indigenous fieldwork, such as site recording, rock art recording, stone artefact recording and creating field maps
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will have:

  • developed the practical and personal skills necessary to conduct field research with Indigenous peoples

  • obtained a practical understanding of the ethical dimensions of Indigenous archaeology

  • obtained practical experience in working with Indigenous communities

  • developed recording skills used in Indigenous fieldwork
