Topic description
This topic will teach students how to undertake ethical and culturally sensitive ethnoarchaeological research. The skills that will be taught include research design, collecting oral histories, ethical interactions with Indigenous groups, rock art recording, site recording, stone artefact recording, assessing evidence and mounting a coherent argument. Under the guidance of Indigenous Elders, this field school provides a unique opportunity for learning and personal growth in the context of sharing daily life with Indigenous Australians. Students must adhere to the same rules of conduct as set forth in the Codes of Ethics of the Australian Archaeological Association and the World Archaeological Congress.

Fees will be charged to cover such things as transport, accommodation and food based on the location of the field school.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • develop the practical and personal skills necessary to conduct field research with Indigenous peoples

  • address the ethical dimensions of ethnoarchaeology

  • offer practical experience in working with Indigenous communities

  • develop students' recording skills used in Indigenous fieldwork, such as site recording, rock art recording, stone artefact recording and creating field maps
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will have:

  • demonstrated the ability to conduct field research with Indigenous peoples in a professional way

  • obtained a practical understanding of the ethical dimensions of Indigenous archaeology

  • obtained practical experience in working with Indigenous communities

  • developed recording skills used in Indigenous fieldwork
