Topic description
This topic employs a number of research strategies allowing the application of theory to particular problems of cultural interpretation; be they legal, anthropological, aesthetic, environmental, or political. Theories of colonialism and the post-colonial will feature in the topic. This topic will particularly assist students with the development of theoretical approaches to research questions.

This topic must be taken concurrently with AUST7101 Approaches to Cultural Theory Part 1.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • address a number of research strategies which allow the application of theory to particular problems of cultural interpretation in the Australian context - whether they be legal, anthropological, linguistic, aesthetic, environmental, or political

  • enable students to further analyse and apply methods of reading and exploring the textuality of events, places, spaces, policies, social rituals, people, communities

  • develop theoretical approaches to particular research questions
Expected learning outcomes
For successful completion of this topic students will:

  • identify research strategies which allow the application of theory to particular problems of cultural interpretation - whether they be historical, legal, anthropological, linguistic, aesthetic, environmental, or political

  • further analyse and apply methods of reading and exploring the textuality of events, places, spaces, policies, social rituals, people and communities

  • demonstrate the ability to develop appropriate theoretical approaches to particular research questions and contexts in the Australian setting
