Topic description
This topic will permit students enrolled in the Australian Studies Honours program to study an Australian subject of special interest through directed study and regular supervision. Identification and application of relevant theoretical methodologies will be an essential part of the study. The subject for study will depend on the interests of available faculty staff and those of the students.

Arrangements should be made with the Honours Coordinator in Australian Studies before enrolling in this topic.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • enable students to design a research topic considering questions associated with Australian society, culture and history

  • apply inter-disciplinary approaches to research and writing at Honours level

  • explore a number of research strategies which allow the application of theory to particular problems of interpretation in an Australian context whether they be legal, anthropological, linguistic, aesthetic, environmental, or political

  • write a research paper with guidance from relevant supervisors
Expected learning outcomes
For successful completion of this topic students will:

  • design a relevant research question focusing on the Australian context

  • identify an appropriate research strategy which allow the application of theory to particular questions and issues, whether they be legal, anthropological, linguistic, aesthetic, environmental, or political

  • apply research to the writing of a research paper exploring a particular question or issue

  • demonstrate developed theoretical approaches or models appropriate to particular research questions and contexts
