Topic description
Ultrasound in diagnosis; Imaging with nuclear magnetic resonance (Magnetic Resonance Imaging - MRI); Ionising radiation, sources of exposure, interaction of alpha, beta, gamma rays and neutrons with matter; Biological effects of radiation; Units of radiation dose and dose limits; Nuclear medicine; Diagnostic use of X-rays; Computed Tomography (CT scanning).
Educational aims
This topic provides students with knowledge and understanding of a broad range of concepts in Medical Physics.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Understand medical imaging techniques and where they are applied in clinical practice
  2. Understand how ionising radiation interacts with matter and its effects on living organisms
