Topic description
This topic provides an introduction to management theory with a focus on human resource management and current trends in managing people in health and aged care settings. Specific areas explored include working with multidisciplinary teams, making the transition from health professional to manager, understanding one's own management style and performance management. As a foundation topic, the syllabus will also cover academic writing and presentation skills at the postgraduate level.
Educational aims
To provide students with a foundation for understanding and applying management theory and to equip students with a range of basic study and management skills
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students should:

  • Understand the development of, and current trends in, key concepts in management theory

  • Be able to apply this theory to the people management tasks in health and aged care settings

  • Understand the principles of leading and managing people, with a focus on working with multidisciplinary teams, the relationship between clinical and managerial work, and the role of the manager

  • Have developed insight into their own managerial style and potential for further development

  • Have enhanced skills in managing staff performance

  • Be able to make competent oral and written presentations

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the methods of writing academic papers
