The topic draws on social theory to develop the foundations of a sociological understanding of health and the practice of health education.

This topic aims to:

• introduce students to the concepts of health and health education using a social view of health

On completion of this topic students will be able to:

• have a broad understanding of the philosophical concepts underlying current practice in Health Education in schools and community settings

• conceptualise health education

• demonstrate they understand that health status is shaped by social issues

• discuss a range of health theories

• describe the relationship between class and health inequalities

• conduct investigations about the health outcomes of specific groups- Indigenous people, those in remote locations etc

• work collaboratively and present well researched information
