Topic description
The topic will introduce students to psychological frameworks which explain human behaviour and will enable them to apply these frameworks to midwifery and incorporate mental health strategies into their practice.
Educational aims
This topic aims to develop students’ knowledge of psychology and capacity to care for women and their families impacted by mental health issues.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expectedl be able to:

  1. Apply psychological theories to midwifery practice

  2. Evaluate the psychology of stress and coping in relation to childbearing families and the midwifery profession

  3. Plan care for women with pre-existing perinatal mental health issues, their families and communities by applying their understanding of the fundamentals pathology

  4. Examine the psychology of bonding and attachment

  5. Critically analyse the influences of family and cultural dynamics in contemporary society

  6. Examine loss and bereavement in the perinatal period.
