Topic description

This topic gives students the foundations for understanding the supply, design and manufacture of various optical appliances. It also provides the skills and understanding to measure, verify and dispense optical appliances, enabling them to perform these tasks to a level that would be acceptable in professional practice.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Enable students to understand how optical appliances are used in optometric practice
  • Provide students with an understanding of the dispensing and verification of optical appliances
  • Provide students with the knowledge required to be confident contributor within optometric practice
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Explain and apply optical theory and calculations to the correction of refractive error
  2. Use optical instruments correctly and accurately to a professionally acceptable level and interpret their results
  3. Explain the optical principles of selected optical instruments
  4. Select, dispense and verify appropriate ophthalmic appliances based on case information and understanding of optical theory
  5. Effectively communicate the dispensing choices to retail staff and patients
