Topic description
Building on students existing knowledge of woman centred Primary Health Care and health promotion, the topic focuses on midwifery as a public heath strategy, providing students with practical examples of innovative community projects. Students are provided the opportunity to analyse the strategies used in these projects including consumer participation, interdisciplinary and interagency collaboration, needs assessment, program development and sustainability.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to prepare students to practice within a woman-centred, primary health care framework.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

    Describe the role of the midwife in woman centered Primary Health Care and Health Promotion
  1. Interpret public health policies and describe their effect on community health
  2. Analyse and critique midwifery, community groups and organizations PHC initiatives
  3. Apply the principles of health education and health promotion in a primary health care framework
  4. Demonstrate beginning level skills in community needs assessment and health promotion
  5. Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively
