Topic description

This topic provides students with the opportunity to participate in a range of practical activities associated with undertaking archaeological and cultural heritage management projects. The emphasis in this topic is on obtaining practical experience within a specific workplace setting by working alongside and learning from a practicum mentor. Students will volunteer with researchers, non-profit groups, commercial organisations, and other groups. As part of this topic, students will put their theoretical learning into practice, develop a sense of a specific workplace, widen their professional networks, enhance their employment opportunities through additional training and develop a range of transferable personal and professional skills.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Introduce students to some of the complexities and requirements of professional archaeological practice by embedding them within an archaeology or cultural heritage management project
  • Offer students the opportunity to acquire additional training and experience in essential practical elements of the archaeology and cultural heritage management profession, including: field, laboratory and library/archival research; community liaison; data analysis and post-processing, and; project management and administration
  • Extend and give further meaning and relevance to students' classroom learning experience
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate practical knowledge of key skills, processes, and requirements of undertaking an archaeology or cultural heritage management project
  2. Establish and maintain professional relationships with stakeholders including archaeologists or cultural heritage managers, community members, and government and non-government organisations
  3. Demonstrate first hand awareness of the ethical, legislative, and policy contexts and frameworks relevant to undertaking archaeology and cultural heritage management projects
  4. Articulate the requirements of working in a team setting, acquiring the professional and personal attributes necessary to operating successfully in the workplace
