Topic description
This topic is the second of four topics that comprise a diabetes course that has been accredited by the Australian Diabetes Educators Association. Topic content includes: the principles of teaching and learning across the life span, the interaction of the family/significant others and the community in the management of clients with diabetes, the principles of health promotion and primary healthcare, group dynamics, critical thinking, interpersonal and communication skills, the role of the diabetes educator, the resources available to the diabetes educator and client, professional diabetes organisations, planning, conducting and evaluating diabetes programs, teaching clients with special needs, diabetes in pregnancy and cultural awareness. On completion, it is expected that this topic will enable students to begin teaching clients and their families how to manage diabetes related health issues.
Educational aims
In this topic students will be introduced to the principles of Primary Health Care, Health Promotion and Teaching And Learning related to managing Diabetes Mellitus (DM) across the lifespan.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Apply the principles of Primary Health Care, and Health Promotion to person-centred care in diabetes management

  2. Utilise the principles of teaching and learning in diabetes education for individual clients or groups across the lifespan

  3. Analyse the changing focus of health care in the context of chronic disease management

  4. Apply health behaviour theories and the concept of behavioural change to diabetes education

  5. Examine the management of clients with diabetes mellitus and those with other medical and/or psychosocial needs

  6. Critically reflect on own communication style and develop strategies to facilitate effective verbal and non-verbal communication with clients with diabetes mellitus.
