The topic introduces qualitative research and evaluation relevant to remote and Indigenous Health. The topic begins by discussing the differences in qualitative and quantitative research then focuses on qualitative research. It introduces epistemology (theory of knowledge) and ontological methods. The topic explores several qualitative data collection methods and data analysis. The topic involves developing a research proposal that includes a literature review and an ethics application. There is a particular focuses on a culturally safe approach to research involving Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

The topic aims to equip students to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to design a research proposal and to evaluate a program related to Remote and Indigenous Health

On completion of this topic, students will be able to:

• Describe the differences between qualitative and quantitative research

• Examine ontological and epistemological approaches to research involving remote and Indigenous health issues

• Demonstrate skills in locating and critically appraising relevant research literature and identifying knowledge gaps to develop a research/evaluation question

• Develop a research question and research design relating to remote and Indigenous health

• Demonstrate an understanding of the NHMRC guidelines to conducting research involving humans and identify specific ethical issues in relation to research involving Indigenous peoples

• Apply knowledge of research design and data collection methods to develop a research proposal.
