This topic provides students from diverse professional backgrounds with a framework to consider the issues and challenges of researching vulnerable populations. Understanding ethics in research, particularly when involving vulnerable populations provides a strong foundation in achieving a better understanding of research design and methodology. The decision-making process in designing and conducting research with vulnerable people must take place in the context of ethical considerations. The focus of the topic is 'understanding design and ethics in research with vulnerable populations'. Through this focus students will examine key concepts in research design, methodological challenges when researching vulnerable populations and the process of developing a sound research proposal in the context of ethical considerations.

This topic aims to provide the student with a framework in which to develop a sound research proposal that can be used for completion of postgraduate degree studies. The topic takes a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding research within vulnerable populations. Ethical considerations in research provide the framework for students to develop the knowledge and understanding in order to identify the appropriate research design for research within vulnerable populations. From this foundation, students will be able to cultivate the skills to develop a research proposal and corresponding application for ethical review, preparing them to complete robust postgraduate research that focuses on or includes vulnerable populations.

Recognise a wide range of research design and their appropriate uses for research within vulnerable populations

Apply an appropriate selection of research methods to a specific topic in research within vulnerable populations

Appraise previous research and literature on a topic of interest to develop a research question

Design an independent research project

Demonstrate cultural sensitivity in developing research

Demonstrate an understanding of research ethics through the completion of an application from the appropriate Flinders University human research ethics committee that is at submission standard
