The Graduate Diploma in Nursing (Global Health Care) is a 36-unit course offered by the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.
Admission requirements
Applicants must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification in a health profession from an approved tertiary institution.
However, the Board may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.
The course will not lead to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
Course aims
The Graduate Diploma in Nursing (Global Health Care) aims to:
- facilitate development of specialised knowledge, skills and attributes for application in a range of global Nursing environments
- extend student knowledge in research for practice development
Learning outcomes
In addition to the Learning Outcomes of the Graduate Diploma in Nursing, on completion of this course, students in the Global Health Care specialisation will be able to:
- Analyse factors that influence policy development from a global perspective
- Evaluate how policy and political contexts impact on the social determinants of health
- Critically analyse international health policy and its impact on health systems and population health

Pathways
The course requires students to complete 31.5 units of core topics and 4.5 units of topics from one of the pathways listed below:
Program of Study
To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Nursing (Global Health Care) a student must complete 36 units as specified below with a grade of Pass or NGP or better in each topic.
The award of a grade of Fail (F) in the same topic on more than one occasion or in 9 units or more, or failure to complete the course within four consecutive semesters may constitute prima facie evidence of unsatisfactory progress for the purposes of the University's Policy on Student Progress.
Except with permission of the Faculty Board:
- no topic may be attempted more than twice
- a student may not include a topic which repeats work previously undertaken.
Not all topics will be available in any given year or semester
Pathway 1: Leading Quality and Safety
In addition to Global Health Care Learning Outcomes above, on completion of Pathway 1: Leading Quality and Safety, students will be able to:
- Analyse the concept of clinical governance as it applies to a range of organisations in a global health context
- systematically review care provision in a range of organisations against health care standards and accreditation processes
- implement the processes required to ensure quality and safety within organisations in a global health context

- analyse how the social determinants of health inform health policy
- analyse global policy and health programs through the principles of primary health care
- critique the roles of health professionals in informing, implementing and evaluating global policy and health strategies
- critique processes of partnership and sustainability in achieving improved health outcomes for a diverse range of population groups
