Phasing out course

The Bachelor of Business and Technology is a 108 unit program in which 72 units of block credit is automatically granted on the basis of completion of a prior bachelor’s degree in the field of Science, Engineering, Medical Science or Business from Flinders University or an approved equivalent qualification from another institution. Students must complete 36 units of study as set out below to complete the degree.  This requires one year of full-time study (or the equivalent part-time). The Bachelor of Business Technology is administered by the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Students may only undertake either the Bachelor of Business and Technology or the Master of Business Technology.

Admission requirements

The minimum requirements for consideration for entry to all undergraduate courses are specified in detail in the University Entry Requirements.

Applicants must either:

  1. be enrolled in a Science, Engineering, Medical Science or Business degree from Flinders University, and have successfully completed at least 36 units of that degree with a minimum GPA of 4, or
  2. have completed a Science, Engineering, Medical Science or Business degree from Flinders University or an approved equivalent qualification from another University.

The Bachelor of Business and Technology cannot be taken as a stand-alone award except where it follows completion of a Science, Engineering, Medical Science or Business degree.

Course aims

The course has been designed to build upon the skills acquired in a relevant Bachelor's degree and specifically provide graduates of science, engineering and business awards with:

  • an understanding of the theory and practice of innovation and entrepreneurship and how it applies to their previous field of study
  • business and innovation skills to complement the students existing practical skills acquired in prior studies
  • an understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities and a commitment to them
  • an ability to apply existing knowledge of business and technology to contribute to innovation and entrepreneurship within an organisation
  • an ability to carry out management tasks in a science or engineering-based enterprise
  • an ability to understand a typical science and engineering company structure, operation, responsibilities and business culture.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the award, students will be able to:

  • competently use professional skills and knowledge in an environment in which innovation is essential
  • apply skills and knowledge from prior studies in a professionally responsible manner
  • communicate effectively with other scientists and engineers as well as associated professionals and the wider community using a wide range of communication technologies
  • work professionally as an individual and in a team
  • develop ideas and solutions appropriate to the social, political, economic and environmental contexts in which they are applied
  • engage in the process of continuing learning, building upon prior studies in a relevant area to retain the necessary level of professional skills and knowledge.

Program of study

To qualify for The Bachelor of Business and Technology a student must complete 36 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the program of study below.

Students undertaking The Bachelor of Business and Technology will not be eligible for the award until all of the requirements for that degree and those of the science, engineering or business degree with which it is paired have been completed.

Note that in The Bachelor of Business and Technology 72 units of block credit is effectively granted to enable students to complete the award, however no further credit towards the 36 unit program of study can be granted for previous study.

Not all topics are necessarily available in a given year.

Students who have completed the first 36 units of the Master of Business Technology will be deemed eligible for The Bachelor of Business and Technology, and may exit with a Bachelor of Business and Technology.

This award has two schedules:

  • Schedule 1 - For those currently enrolled in, or having completed a Science, Engineering or Medical Science award
  • Schedule 2 - For those currently enrolled in, or having completed a Business award

 DSGN3700  Business and Technology Practicum*  (9 units) AND
 BUSN3026  Business Planning for New Ventures  (4.5 units)

OR

 STEP3710  Business and Technology Practicum - Extended**  (13.5 units)

Plus 9 units from either Schedule 1 or Schedule 2:

 BUSN1011  Accounting For Managers  (4.5 units) AND
 One Table B option topic#  (4.5 units)

Schedule 2

 Two Table B option topics#  (9 units)

*In exceptional circumstances and with the permission of the course coordinator, DSGN3700 Business and Technology Practicum may be replaced by 9 units of options listed in Table B

**Students who intend to undertake their practicum outside of Australia should instead enrol in the topic ENGR3710 International Engineering Practicum.  Enrolment is subject to approval by the School and will consider the quality and appropriateness of the placement.

#Those undertaking schedule 1 must undertake options listed as Group B while those undertaking Schedule 2 must undertake options listed in Group T.
