The Bachelor of General Science, Master of Teaching (Primary R-7) double degree is a pre-service teacher education course which requires five years of full-time study (or the equivalent part-time). Students who study part-time would normally be expected to complete the double degree program within ten years.

The course is offered by the Faculty of Education, Humanities and Law, in conjunction with the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

The minimum requirements for consideration for entry to all undergraduate courses are specified in detail in the University Entry Requirements.

Course aims

The course aims to provide graduates with a sound basis of knowledge in their chosen areas of study in the Bachelor of General Science together with the ability to apply an advanced/specialised body of content and pedagogical knowledge, skills and dispositions to:

  • plan, implement and advocate transformative teaching and learning in the primary years
  • enact policies and practices that take account of social and individual difference, ensuring that all children learn in safe and supportive environments
  • work independently and collaboratively with children, colleagues and communities to construct and assess inclusive and intellectually challenging curriculum in the primary years
  • engage in critical reflection and continuing professional learning through a variety of pathways including research-based projects

Learning outcomes

On completion of the double degree program graduates will be able to:

  • demonstrate achievement of the learning outcomes of the Bachelor of General Science, including the knowledge and ability to : understand the role of science in society, operate within the relevant regulatory frameworks and value ethical behaviour in scholarship and professional activity; analyse and critically evaluate ideas and data and apply relevant scientific principles to solve problems; retrieve and communicate scientific information to a variety of audiences; apply the theories, subject content and professional methodologies  in the science disciplines they have studied to an education setting
  • synthesise in-depth, current knowledge and an integrated understanding of the theories, content and processes of learning and teaching in the primary years
  • articulate advanced knowledge and reflexivity regarding children’s development and individual and social differences, including for Indigenous Australians
  • apply the cognitive, technical and creative skills and dispositions to create and maintain mutually respectful and safe/socially just learning environments in the primary years
  • communicate respectfully with students, colleagues, parents and communities to enhance professional practice and student learning in primary schools
  • apply the cognitive, technical and creative skills to construct and assess inclusive and intellectually challenging curriculum in the primary years
  • demonstrate and apply sound knowledge of research principles and methods to complete a research based project in primary education
  • commit to ongoing professional learning to do with new discourses, debates and issues in education as they arise in the primary years
  • demonstrate dispositions towards relational and transformative education and a strong sense of themselves as agents, advocates and leading professionals in the primary years.

Program of study

To qualify for the double degree of Bachelor of General Science, Master of Teaching (Primary R-7), a student must:

  • complete 180 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, consisting of 108 units in the Bachelor of General Science and 72 units in the Master of Teaching, according to the program of study below; and
  • meet the required benchmark in the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE). Students must normally meet the benchmark within three attempts. Further attempts may be recommended by the Faculty Board under exceptional circumstances.

Except with the permission of the Faculty Board, a student may not proceed to the Master level topics in years four and five unless they have satisfactorily completed the first three years of the double degree.

Students will normally need to have achieved a GPA of 5.00 or higher in the first 108 units to enter the Masters component in the final two years of the double degree. Under exceptional circumstances and subject to specific conditions, the Faculty Board may permit students who do not meet this GPA requirement to enter the final two years of the double degree. Those not meeting this requirement will transfer to the four-year Bachelor of Education (Primary R-7)), Bachelor of General Science double degree.

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (Primary R-7), Bachelor of General Science may transfer to Bachelor of General Science, Master of Teaching (Primary R-7) if they have achieved a GPA of at least 5.00 after completion of 36 or 72 units of the degree. Under exceptional circumstances and subject to specific conditions, the Faculty Board may invite other students to transfer.

Except with the permission of the Board:

  • no compulsory Education topic may be taken more than twice
  • professional experience topics may not be attempted more than once.

Students should note that professional experience topics require full-time commitment for their duration.

The 108 unit Bachelor of General Science component must include:

  • 36 units comprising any two General Science groups below;
  • 22.5 units of Science topics at level 2000 or above subject to prerequisites*;
  • 9 units of Science topics*; and
  • 40.5 units of Education topics.
