The Diploma of Letters (Sports Performance Coaching) requires the equivalent of one year of full-time study. It is only offered as an exit award for students currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Letters (Sports Performance Coaching).

The stream undertaken by the student will be identified on the student’s transcript of academic record and on the parchment presented to the student on completion of the course.

Course aims

The course aims to provide students with:

  • knowledge of the nature of sport development and administration in Australia
  • knowledge of training principles and periodisation to assist in strength and conditioning program design
  • an understanding of the theoretical framework of Resistance Training in the context of Strength, Power, Hypertrophy and Muscular Endurance
  • an understanding of the principles of sport coaching
  • knowledge of field based physiological testing from a theoretical and practical perspective
  • the ability to prescribe exercise as a result of testing, and examine the importance of physiological testing, and how it can be best utilised in the field
  • the knowledge and ability to investigate the physiological demands of various sports and how athletes physiological functioning can be improved using principles of strength and conditioning
  • an understanding of how skills in sport are acquired and can be improved to enhance performance
  • the opportunity to investigate a further area of interest relevant to sport performance (skill acquisition, biomechanics or psychology).

Learning outcomes

On the completion of the Diploma of Letters (Sports Performance Coaching), students are expected to be able to:

  • analyse and review critically the nature of sport development and administration in Australia
  • demonstrate knowledge of the theoretical framework for training principles, periodisation and exercise selection in the context of program design
  • utilise appropriate programming that targets Strength, Power, Hypertrophy and Muscular Endurance
  • apply the principles of sport coaching
  • evaluate existing resistance programs and make modifications if required
  • explain the link between movement analysis of a chosen sport and the need to perform physiological testing
  • demonstrate knowledge of how physiological testing fits into the annual plan of strength and conditioning coaches
  • implement and interpret the results of a variety of field based physiological tests
  • prescribe exercise as a result of field based physiological testing
  • design a strength and conditioning program for a chosen team or individual
  • identify the physiological demands of various sports and apply principles of strength and conditioning to improve athletes physiological functioning
  • demonstrate knowledge of how skills in sport are acquired and can be improved to enhance performance
  • demonstrate knowledge of a further area of interest relevant to sport performance (skill acquisition, biomechanics or psychology).
