Visiting medical students

Domestic and international medical students can apply to undertake a hospital placement in South Australia and the Northern Territory.



Flinders University is able to accept a limited number of visiting students at Flinders Medical Centre, the teaching hospital associated with the School of Medicine.

Placements are available to final year medical students to undertake clinical electives, for a minimum period of four weeks and a maximum period of eight weeks.

Attachments are not offered during December or January.


Placement type

Because of commitments to Flinders medical students, placements in General Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Anaesthesia and Dermatology are not available to international students.

Placements in Psychiatry, Radiology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Vascular Surgery, Orthopaedics and other areas may be possible.


Partner universities

Medical students from our following international partners need to be nominated by their university before they apply:

  • Central South University, Changsha, China
  • Manipal University, India
  • Dresden University of Technology, Germany

The contact person at Flinders University will communicate with the nominated students and provide information on admission processes. You will be required to prepare your documents as shown below. Your fees and accommodation may be organised by Flinders University as per the agreements with each respective university.

Medical students from our following international partners should still apply via this website, but will have their administration fee waived:

Darwin & Alice Springs

Medical student placements at Royal Darwin Hospital and Alice Springs Hospital are organised through Flinders NT.

Placements are available for students enrolled in their penultimate or final year of a medical degree, for a minimum period of four weeks and a maximum of eight weeks.

As a general rule we start processing applications for the following year in September/ October.

All medical student placements are subject to availability and formal approval. Opportunities may be available at Darwin within the departments of:

Placement type - Alice Springs

Medical student placements in Alice Springs are available to domestic students only and are subject to availability and formal approval. Opportunities may be possible at Alice Springs within the departments of:

  • Anaesthesia
  • Emergency Medicine
  • General Medicine
  • General Surgery
  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology (Flinders student only)
  • Ophthalmology
  • Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Paediatrics
  • Psychiatry
  • Renal Medicine


Working with children clearance

Once you have received formal approval of your placement you need to apply for a Working with Children clearance (Ochre Card).

You cannot commence a placement in the NT without being able to produce your Ochre Card prior to the placement start date. If you arriving in the NT to start your placement without your Ochre Card, you will have your placement cancelled and you will be sent home. Flinders NT will not be responsible for any costs incurred as a result of this.

You are advised to apply for your Ochre Card at least 8 weeks before your placement start date.

You will need to be proactive in following up your application with Safe NT if eight weeks passes and you have not received your card. Persistence in following up with them is advised until a response has been received.

International applicants are unable to apply online for an Ochre Card. You must complete a hardcopy application and send via post.

How to apply

Complete the online Visiting Medical Student Elective Request and attach the following documents:

  • Resume/CV
  • Official academic transcript as at current date
  • University reference letter of good standing, which must include a statement regarding your level of English competency

Once you have received a letter of offer, you must provide the following:

  • Administration fee AU$200 within three weeks
  • Current police check (from your home country, translated into English)
  • Proof of Professional Indemnity Insurance cover
  • Copy of personal health/travel insurance
  • Updated immunisation record as per the vaccination schedule supplied

Alice Springs

Information about:


An administration fee of AUD 200 applies once your have been offered a placement. Please check with your university medical school office for any elective exchange program with Flinders University where the fee is waived.


Visiting students must make arrangements for the issue of a visa for entry into Australia. Clinical elective placements are classed as observation visits therefore require a visitor visa only. Do not apply for a working or business visa.

Adelaide accommodation

The University is unable to provide accommodation for visiting elective students not attending as part of a formal exchange.

Darwin accommodation

Students are responsible for their own accommodation and any travel costs to and from Darwin.

A small amount of shared student accommodation is available for rent through Flinders NT on a ‘first come first served’ basis. The cost is $110 per week per student with a $100 refundable bond and a $55 admin fee.

This accommodation is close to public transport and is a 30-minute walk to the hospital.

Accommodation includes:

  • All linen
  • Fully functional laundry with washing machine, dryer, iron and ironing board
  • Kitchen with a good supply of cooking utensils
  • Wireless internet

You are expected to cover your own travel, accommodation, insurance (both health and professional indemnity) and living costs
