Please note: While theoretical content delivered online can be accessed anywhere within the Northern Territory with internet coverage, the clinical skills and practical education will be delivered by practical workshop intensives held in Darwin. This will require students to spend up to 1 or 2 weeks in Darwin each semester.

Study Paramedicine in the NT – St John Volunteer Pathway

An annual sub quota of up to five places is available specifically for St John Ambulance Australia (NT) volunteers. To be eligible you must have a minimum of 18 months volunteer experience with St John Ambulance Australia (NT) and have undertaken a minimum of 60 hours voluntary commitment per year during the past 18 months (applicants must also meet the University’s minimum entry requirements which includes completion of a VET Certificate 3 (or higher) in the Health Training Package award from St John Ambulance Australia).

What you will study

First year

A typical first year may include:

strategies to obtain, value and use information relevant to patients
study of normal human anatomy and physiology
principles of medical and trauma-related paramedic practice
familiarisation with the paramedic environment and equipment
fundamental skills and basic life support procedures

Second year

A typical second year may include:

study of human pathophysiology or abnormal function of body systems
exposure to more advanced concepts and skills in paramedic practice to prepare you to make complex patient-related decisions
clinical emergency placements
learning advanced life support procedures and how to manage common medical and traumatic emergencies

Third year

A typical third year may include:

continued development of clinical skills and decision making capability
clinical emergency placements
integration of broader concepts of health care into paramedic practice
specialist topics covering paediatrics, obstetrics, geriatrics and pharmacology
an intensive final semester topic in applied paramedic practice

Practical experience

The degree provides you with practical experience that prepares you for the workforce.

Perform shifts with patient transport services, emergency support services and an emergency operations centre in first year.
To consolidate their clinical and theoretical understanding in real-life situations, students will perform three hundred hours of emergency ambulance placements. These placements will be provided in the students home town where they reside in Darwin, Alice Springs and Katherine, with arrangements for students living in Nhulunbuy, Tennant Creek or remote communities organised on an individual basis. To maintain industry relevance, the degree actively collaborates with the South Australian Ambulance Service (SAAS), Ambulance Victoria (AV) and St John NT and relies heavily on input from practising, experienced paramedics.

What you will need

To complete clinical placements you must:

undertake and pass a medical and physical fitness assessment
complete a manual handling training program
complete a National Criminal History check through the Territory police service or a recognised online provider.

All clinical ambulance placements will be performed with St John NT requiring students to meet a range of pre-placement requirements at their own cost. These include passing a medical and functional capacity assessment, completing a National Criminal History check, obtaining a Northern Territory Working with Children Card (Ochre Card) and providing an immunisation record of vaccination or evidence of immunity against specified diseases. Applicants are strongly encouraged to commence all pre-placement requirements as outlined on the Degree website as soon as they have received an offer as placement compliance delays will impact the capacity to commence placements and prevent progression through the course.

This course is only available to applicants eligible under the remote and outer regional sub-quota, Indigenous sub-quota and/or the St John Ambulance Australia (NT) sub-quota. Applicants will be ranked for admission based on academic merit.

Remote and outer regional sub-quotas

This course is only available to applicants eligible under the remote and outer regional sub quota.

You must submit a Statutory Declaration to SATAC within 10 working days of your application confirming you have lived in remote or outer regional areas of Australia (Remoteness Classifications RA3 to RA5) for:

* at least two years out of the past six years, or

* a total of five years since starting primary school in a remote and/or outer regional areas (RA3 to RA5).

This is assessed based on an applicant's primary residential address.

Applicants can check their eligibility in accordance with the definition above using the Australian Government's Health Workforce Locator. Enter the address you wish to search for using the 'ASGS Remoteness Area' '2021'. As part of a transition year for 2026 entry, applicants can also be assessed against the ‘ASGS Remoteness Area’ ‘2016’ if not eligible under the 2021 layer. For 2027 entry, applicants will only be assessed using the 'ASGS Remoteness Area' '2021' layer.

An annual sub quota of up to five places is available for Indigenous applicants. To be considered for the Indigenous subquota you must submit to SATAC a document signed under Common Seal from an incorporated Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander organisation in the community from which you originate or are recognised, within 10 working days of your application.

To be eligible for this subquota you must be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander in accordance with the Commonwealth definition which requires that you:

be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, and
identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, and
be accepted as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in the community in which they live or have lived.

If you are unable to provide a document signed under Common Seal you may provide a Statutory Declaration to SATAC confirming you are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island descent.

St John Ambulance Australia (NT) volunteers

An annual sub quota of up to five places is available for St John Ambulance Australia (NT) volunteers. To be eligible under this subquota you must mail to Flinders within 10 working days of submitting your SATAC application evidence confirming you meet the following criteria:

have a minimum of 18 months volunteer work experience with St John Ambulance Australia (NT) and,
have undertaken a minimum of 60 hours voluntary commitment per year during the past 18 months.

This can be evidenced by providing a statement from the relevant Divisional Superintendent (or authorised training/volunteer services officer). This documentation should be emailed to askflinders@flinders.edu.au.

In addition, you must meet the University's minimum entry requirements. Selection is based on academic merit.

Applicants must also upload the statement confirming their volunteer work experience with St John Ambulance Australia (NT) to their mySATAC application. Under 'Submission' in the navigation menu, select 'Documents' then 'Upload personal documents'.

If you don’t meet our English language entry requirements and need to improve your English language proficiency, you can do so through Flinders University Academy – or our approved English Language Instruction Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) providers.
