| Professor Marc Keirse | Head of Department DPhil DPH FRACOG FRCOG I have lived and practiced in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in three countries (and several languages) before joining the Flinders University of South Australia in 1995. I have held Professorships at three universities in three different countries and apply all of this to promote students exposure to health care systems overseas. I received international acclaim for my discovery of the patterns of prostaglandin metabolism in the pregnant uterus and, later on, for being one of three persons who introduced "effective care" across a whole medical discipline, laying the foundations for what is now referred to as "evidence based medicine" and the emergence of the Cochrane Collaboration. My research efforts have resulted in 280 full scientific publications ranging from laboratory-based biochemistry to population-based epidemiology centred predominantly on understanding the fundamental mechanisms of labour and birth and improving the care for mother and baby at these crucial times in their lives. Throughout my career from medical school onwards I have remained radical in believing that effective health care is a basic human right that should be independent of stature in life or ability to pay.
