Your honours year is an intensive research program where you will complete an independent thesis in a specialised area of public health.
The honours program enables students to demonstrate their ability to work in a research environment. You’ll work under expert supervision, present your findings, and develop the high-level research skills needed for public health leadership and further study.
Research Thesis
Independent research project under academic supervision
Seminars
Present research findings and receive peer feedback
Workshops
Training in research methods, statistical analysis, and research ethics.
Laboratory/field work
Practical experience depending on research project
Public Health honours students work across leading research themes that address current and emerging health challenges.
Population Health
Understanding health trends to inform policy and practice.
Indigenous Health
Promoting equity through culturally informed research and interventions.
Health Systems & Policy
Evaluating and improving health service delivery.
Epidemiology & Biostatistics
Analysing data to identify risk factors and outcomes.

Students benefit from access to Flinders’ modern laboratories, research institutes, and specialist centres. Dedicated library services and collaborative research spaces provide the support needed to excel in your independent project.
You'll be embedded within the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute (FHMRI), a world-class facility driving discoveries that advance public health, disease prevention, and health promotion across communities.
Study beside experts from the National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction (NCETA), a leading national research centre recognised for its expertise in alcohol and other drug (AOD) research, education, and workforce development. Students gain access to cutting-edge projects that influence policy and practice across Australia, working alongside researchers who specialise in prevention, treatment, and systems responses to reduce AOD-related harms.
An honours year in public health prepares graduates for research, policy, and leadership roles.
