“Navigating the healthcare system as a cancer patient can be an overwhelming experience, especially for those facing multiple barriers such as lack of health and system knowledge, lack of financial resources or health insurance coverage, geographic distances from care providers, and lack of social support. An evidence-based state-wide cancer navigation framework and action plan, led by consumers and clinicians, will help everyone to get the best possible care.”
– Crawford-Williams
Cancer navigation refers to how a patient navigates cancer care and is a key element of coordinated, person-centred care and support.
Cancer navigation works to improve access to care and continuity of care, particularly among populations experiencing unmet needs and disparities in cancer care. Our CSP research team within the Caring Futures Institute (CFI) partnered with the Commission on Excellence and Innovation in health (CEIH and the Cancer Statewide Clinical Network (SCN) to develop a South Australian cancer navigation framework which imagines a future where the highest standard of healthcare is available to all and where people are truly at the centre. This partnership has resulted in a comprehensive framework, informed by evidence-based research, consumer engagement, and consultation with key healthcare stakeholders. The Framework acknowledges the valuable work already underway within the sector and aims to amplify these efforts.
Goal
The Framework serves as a roadmap to inform future investments and guide improvements in cancer navigation across the South Australian healthcare system. The navigation strategies identified address the complex needs of people affected by cancer (including patients, survivors, their families, and carers) to reduce barriers to accessing timely and appropriate cancer care throughout the entire cancer care continuum.
The project partners are committed to promoting this Framework as a best practice resource and fostering collaboration to ensure its successful implementation.
