University was a bit of a culture shock at first – you’re independent and responsible for your own learning compared to school, and that pushed me. I had lecturers in maths and physics who were really supportive and willing to put in extra time. They had an open door policy and were very engaging in class. That’s what I’ll try to focus on when I’m in the classroom.
I chose to study teaching at Flinders to influence the lives of young people and give them a male role model at school. Flinders also has a great connection with the school I graduated from and the convenience of being able to study close to home - with onsite car parking and class flexibility has allowed me to continue working and coaching. During my studies, I had the opportunity to experience the Grampians National Park with a group of 60 students where we completed activities such as rock climbing, abseiling and kayaking. The experiences I’ve had at Flinders have prepared me to be the teacher I want to be.
