Our team specialises in investigating how key lifestyle behaviours—particularly sleep, nutrition, and physical activity, the three pillars of a healthy life—shape population health. We study patterns, determinants, and outcomes of lifestyle-related risks, contributing to both clinical and public health interventions that promote long-term wellbeing.
Our lifestyle epidemiology research addresses big-picture questions through a population health lens. We explore how people live their 24-hour day—including sleep, diet, movement, and inactivity—and how these behaviours collectively influence cardiometabolic, mental, and overall health.
We lead and collaborate on large-scale longitudinal and cohort studies, both in Australia and internationally, working alongside other research institutions, government departments, and industry partners. Our work spans from clinical populations to community settings, aiming to improve prevention, early detection, and management of chronic conditions through lifestyle-based strategies.
We are particularly focused on identifying at-risk populations and applying precision and personalised approaches to improve intervention effectiveness. By leveraging observational data, repurposing existing datasets, and applying advanced analytical methods—including causal inference and machine learning—we uncover new insights into how lifestyle behaviours shape health trajectories and health system needs.
Our projects deliver both scientific and translational impact through the following key activities:
Please refer to our staff profiles for further information on current specific projects.
Prof Adams is Principal Investigator of The North West Adelaide Health Study (NWAHS) and co-led the process of harmonisation with the Florey Adelaide Male Ageing Study (FAMAS), such that there are now over 2000 men aged over 35 being followed in the Male Androgen, Inflammation, Lifestyle, Environment and Stress (MAILES) cohort. He was responsible for the conduct of sleep studies in almost 850 men in the MAILES cohort, one of the largest longitudinal cohort studies worldwide of sleep health in the community.
We have long-term international and Australian sleep health partnerships across universities, South Australian Local Health Network and with industry groups. Please contact a research directly to discuss opportunities.
