A Clinical Radiologist is a specialist medical doctor who has had postgraduate training in performing and interpreting diagnostic imaging tests, and carrying out interventional procedures or treatments, using X-ray, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging equipment.
A Radiation Oncologist is a specialist doctor who uses radiation therapy in the treatment of cancer patients. Radiation Oncologists work in teams with other doctors to create and deliver radiation therapy programs.
The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) is a not-for-profit professional organisation for clinical radiologists and radiation oncologists in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. RANZCR encompasses two Faculties, the Faculty of Clinical Radiology and the Faculty of Radiation Oncology, that are the peak bodies for our professions in Australia and New Zealand.

Applying to RANZCR specialty training programs commencing in 2026
For all accredited training positions commencing in 2025 applicants are required to register with the College. This registration will need to be completed prior to any trainee job applications submitted to the jurisdictions.
In Australia, sites advertise radiation oncology positions, then candidates apply directly to the hospital/sites/network and will need to submit their College Registration Verification Number (CRVN) as part of their application.

The RANZCR radiation oncology training program is a five-year program in two phases. Phase 1 extends from a minimum of 18 months to a maximum of 30 months. Phase 2 is dependent on trainees demonstrating competency (usually a minimum of 36 months).
Training is undertaken through accredited network training sites. Trainees rotate to a number of training sites throughout their training.

To become a Clinical Radiologist, you must complete the training program administered by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR). The program runs for five years (full time equivalent) and gives you broad experience across the full variety of environments and imaging techniques that clinical radiologists need to be familiar with.
If you are an International Medical Graduate (IMG) in clinical radiology or radiation oncology who wishes to practice in Australia or New Zealand, RANZCR will be involved in assessing your training and experience. There are two main pathways to practising in Australia:
RANZCR also assesses applications for short-term training positions for specialists or specialists-in-training who need to supplement their skills or experience in areas not available in their country.
