Annika Theodoulou

Research Fellow, NCETA

College of Medicine and Public Health

Annika’s research focuses on disease prevention and improving population health through behaviour change, with particular interests in tobacco addiction and evidence synthesis to inform health policy.

She joined Flinders University as a Research Fellow in 2026. Prior to this, she worked with the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine at the University of Oxford, contributing to large-scale evidence syntheses in smoking cessation and weight management.

Alongside this, Annika completed her doctorate at the University of Oxford, where she investigated socioeconomic inequalities in smoking cessation behaviours and outcomes using both quantitative and qualitative methods.

She has led or co-authored over 45 peer-reviewed publications, with work published in high-impact journals including The BMJ, Annals of Internal Medicine, Addiction, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. This work has been cited over 4,600 times and has informed clinical guidelines internationally, including those from the World Health Organization and national UK bodies such as NICE and the Royal College of Physicians.

She is also an Associate Editor for Nicotine & Tobacco Research and an interviewer for the Audio Addiction podcast, produced by the journal Addiction.

She has extensive experience disseminating research through peer-reviewed publications, policy reports, and international conference presentations, and communicates her research to wider audiences through blogs, podcasts, and media engagement.
