Dr Joel Lisk is a Research Fellow in Space Law within the Jeff Bleich Centre for Democracy and Disruptive Technologies at Flinders University.
Joel principally researches the laws applicable to private and commercial activities in new operating domains with a particular focus on the use of outer space. Joel’s main research focuses on how domestic laws are designed and their consequential impacts on commercial activities. Beyond outer space, Joel also looks to how laws can be used to regulate emerging techologies to avoid risks to end consumers.
Joel is a qualified lawyer, having previously worked in the areas of consumer and competition law, data protection, not-for-profits, and complex regulatory regimes.
Joel was a founding Director of the Space Law Council of Australia and New Zealand and continues to act as its Company Secretary. Joel is also a Research Affiliate of the Australian Centre for Space Governance.
Joel has also presented at numerous domestic and international conferences on the topic of legislative compliance and regulatory burdens in the commercial space sector and published technical and broad-audience commentaries on Australian and foreign domestic space law issues.
Joel remains a sole practitioner having previously been an Associate at a national mid-tier law firm where he advised corporate clients on a range of matters within highly regulated industry sectors including space, drones and civil aviation, competition and anti-trust, import and technology controls, data privacy and consumer protection. Joel also works with stakeholders in the legal sector to further the professions understanding of how law applies to space and ensure that lawyers are capable of providing accuate, timely and efficient advice to clients.
