Take your placement beyond the city and gain real-world experience supporting rural, remote and regional communities across Australia. If you're studying Education, Psychology or Social Work, this is your chance to be fearless and challenge yourself in a whole new environment.
Stronger, more personalised supervision: smaller teams often mean closer mentoring, more hands-on guidance and opportunities to take on meaningful work sooner.
More autonomy and responsibility: gain confidence by taking on tasks and decision-making responsibilities at a level not always available in metropolitan placements.
See the Country: Travel to places you might not otherwise visit, discover new landscapes and communities, and enjoy exciting experiences while building lasting friendships along the way.
High employment demand: many regional organisations are actively recruiting graduates, often offering incentives, fast-tracked pathways, or job offers before you even finish.
Grow personally as well as professionally: Step outside your comfort zone, build independence, and immerse yourself in a regional, rural, or remote community, forming new friendships, enjoying an active social life, and gaining memorable experiences alongside your professional development.
Social Work Placements
Collaborate with communities to empower change and strengthen support systems.
Psychology Placements
Support mental health and wellbeing across regional and rural Australia.
Education Placements
Teach in a regional or remote school and inspire students in communities that value your skills.
Here’s what you need to know about rural, remote and regional placements.
Financial Support
There are various subsidies, scholarships and reimbursements available to students depending on the degree you are enrolled in, the location and length of time on placement. Please speak to your college WIL team for more information.
What you'll learn
You’ll learn how to take your classroom theory to a community that truly values your expertise. Plus living far from home, you’ll learn how to get around a new community, build your networks and try new things!
Accommodation
Domestic students may be eligible to access Flinders Rural Remote Accomodation (RRA) in both SA and the NT, depending on their degree and placement location.
International students are encouraged to consider shared accommodation with fellow students to reduce costs and build connections, with support and guidance available to help plan their stay.
How to get there
A driver's licence and access to a reliable car is essential as public transport in rural communities is limited. A car also provides flexibility for local travel, grocery shopping, sightseeing, or participation in community events, helping you make the most of your experience.
Some degrees have financial supports available to students for reimbursement of travel costs.
University Support
Flinders support is never far away! While on placement, you'll be looked after by a Supervisor to ensure your experience is only challenging in the best ways.
International Students
International students are encouraged to connect with International Student Services (ISS) to explore their options and plan for study requirements before committing to a rural placement. With limited Flinders Rural Remote Accommodation (RRA) availability, students are supported to consider shared housing and other accommodation options to make their placement experience smooth and affordable.

Before you go on placement, any issues or concerns about applying for placement, pre-placement requirements (compliance), or the placement allocation process can be managed by your WIL placement team.
Any issues that arise about your topic, study, or assessment should be directed to your topic coordinator.
If you have a problem or concern that arises during placement, your first point of contact is your placement supervisor. Discuss the issue with them and see if you can resolve your concern.
If this does not resolve your issue or you would like to discuss it further, contact your WIL placement team via phone or email.
If the issue or concern has impacted your wellbeing, or you would like to speak with someone confidentially about the matter, Flinders offers a free and confidential counselling service for all students, including students studying entirely online. You can access up to 6 counselling sessions in a calendar year.
If you need to speak with a counsellor urgently, and it is between 8.45am and 5pm please call 8201 2118.
If it is out-of-hours (5pm to 9am, weekends, public holidays), contact the dedicated Flinders Out-of-hours Crisis Line by calling 1300 512 409 or texting 0488 884 103.
