the Hanlon Larsen Experimental Film Grant

Launched in 2025 the Hanlon Larsen Experimental Film Grant (HLEFG) provides support to experimental film projects.

Generously funded by Peter Hanlon in honour of his friend, fellow filmmaker and university lecturer, the late Cole Larsen.

Each year 3 x $5,000 grants will be awarded to support experimental film projects.

We are seeking experimental film projects that challenge traditional storytelling and production techniques. These projects may explore abstract or non-linear narratives, focus on audio visual experiences or prioritise artistic expression and unconventional approaches to filmmaking.

This year the successful film projects will be produced March - October 2026. All three films will screen at The Mercury Cinema in November 2026.

Application Requirements

Written proposal - up to 500 words
Budget - including how items are funded, and any in-kind support
Pitch Deck - max 10 slides
Up to three examples / links to existing work (optional)
A video response - max 3 minutes (optional)

Eligibility

Only Flinders University alumni are eligible to apply
- Alumni must have studied in the areas of Arts, Creative Arts or Creative Industries
- Alumni, employed by Flinders University on an ongoing basis, are not eligible
- Flinders University PhD students undertaking practice-led research may apply
