Engage students in your organisation.

Placements / Internships

• Structured, supervised opportunity for students to gain practical experience with your organisation as part of their study.
• Form part of study requirements and are approved by the university
• Include defined timeframes or hours depending on the discipline
• Involve students applying their learning in a real work environment

Industry projects

• Defined projects where a team of students work with your organisation to address a real challenge or opportunity
• Students conduct research, analysis and problem-solving relevant to your organisation
• You receive insights, recommendations or potential solutions
• Delivered as part of a student’s study, typically within a set study period

While requirements vary across disciplines, most arrangements include:

• Providing a safe and supportive environment
• Offering meaningful, real-world tasks
• Nominating a supervisor
• Engaging with the university as needed

Flinders provides support during all stages of placement processes, including:

• Preparing students for the workplace
• Guidance on supervision and expectations
• Administrative support (agreements, documentation)

Timing and structure is variable and we will provide details when you connect with us. Here is some general guidance to consider:

• Placements generally aligned to academic calendars, although some areas will occur across summer.
• Duration varies by discipline, but will generally be a fixed duration requirement
• Options may include full-time or part-time
• Team or multi-disciplinary placements are possible in some areas

As students undertake placements as part of their study requirements, placements can be unpaid, however:

• Paid opportunities are encouraged and supported where possible
• Requirements vary depending on the type of placement and discipline
• If a student is paid they will generally need to become an employee of your organisation for the duration of their placement
• Refer to Fair Work* for more information

Flinders will enter into a placement agreement with your organisation that:

• Outlines the responsibilities of all parties
• Covers insurance, confidentiality and IP
• Includes any required student compliance checks
• Can remain in place for multiple placements over time
