The Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians (ACSEP) is the pre-eminent professional body representing Sport and Exercise Physicians and Sport and Exercise Medicine in Australasia.

The MOST Course combines current theory and a practical approach to equip medical professionals with the core skills needed to manage traumatic sporting injuries, on and off the field. The course addresses common emergencies that might confront a sports physician, covers the rationale behind treatment choices and the adaption of medical management at sporting events and out in the field. The MSK Ultrasound Workshop, held yearly at the ACSEP Annual Scientific Conference, provides a teaching environment using Sonosite machines and the opportunity for hands on experience in diagnostic imaging and interventional techniques. Read more

Determination of applicant eligibility for the Training Program is undertaken by the Interview and Selection Committee. Applicants must provide suitable evidence for each of the following eligibility criteria, by the closing date for their Application to the Training Program.

The first step is completing a minimum of three full-time equivalent years of “Foundation Training”. Unlike other Colleges that run specific Foundation Training program, ACSEP allows the graduate to determine their own Foundation Training Pathway within the general medical and surgical fields. Recommended rotations include general medical unit, accident and emergency unit and an orthopaedic service dealing mainly in sports medicine related orthopaedics or trauma. It is highly recommended that intending applicants demonstrate a commitment to a career in Sport and Exercise Medicine. What is done during these years is recorded in a prospective applicant’s CV and influences their success rate in getting into the ACSEP Training Program. Ideally, they should demonstrate their interest in SEM via academic achievement, research achievement, relevant clinical rotations, sport and exercise medicine-specific work history, leadership, community engagement and involvement within a range of other SEM activities.

• Current, unconditional, Medical Registration from the applicable Medical Board or Council in Australia or New Zealand.
• Completion of suitably acceptable postgraduate first and second years (PGY01, PGY02) and the commencement of, at minimum, PGY03 or a suitably acceptable third year of medical training. Applicants who have not yet completed PGY03 will anticipate its completion prior to the date of commencement on the Training Program.
• Permanent Residency or Citizenship of Australia or New Zealand.
• Successful completion of the ACSEP Entrance Examination

Overseas training in the specialty of Sport and Exercise Medicine overseas does not always correspond to the Australian and New Zealand context. Every Specialist International Medical Graduate (SIMG) applying for specialist assessment requires an individualised assessment of comparability to the Australian and New Zealand trained Sport and Exercise Physician.

To be eligible to apply for assessment with ACSEP applicants must:

• Hold a primary degree in medicine and surgery issued by a recognised international medical school and verified by the Australian Medical Council (AMC).
• Have completed formal post-graduate training in Sport and Exercise Medicine.
• Have obtained specialist recognition from a recognised college or equivalent body and provide evidence of specialist recognition.
• Have participated in a continuing professional development program since obtaining the specialist qualification.
• Have recency of practice in the relevant scope of practice.
• Demonstrate they have the necessary English language skills for the purpose of registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency (AHPRA).

The Training Program is a minimum of three years and seven months in duration. Each training year consists of a minimum of 44 weeks dedicated to Clinical Training spread over the 52-week Training Program Year. A range of Training Program requirements must be completed during the Training Program to achieve fellowship.
