This bust of Italian poet, writer and philosopher Dante Alighieri (1265–1321) was presented to the University in 1966 by Dottore Giorgio Maser, President of the Dante Alighieri Society of SA. Together, with the support of the local Italian community, Dottore Maser was instrumental in having a Chair of Italian established at Flinders University. Dante Alighieri was best known for his literary masterpiece La commedia, later retitled La divina commedia (The Divine Comedy).
