Michael Kutschbach’s practice is rooted in material and process-led exploration, which results in sculptural, haptic and hybrid forms that resist fixed interpretation. His work navigates the thresholds between organic and artificial forms, the past and future, and surface and depth, engaging with abstraction as a speculative language. His forms appear as fragmented relics or emergent entities, often operating in a state of flux, and evoke ambiguous functions and shifting identities.
Michael studied painting at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne (1993-96), completed a Masters (Visual Art) at the South Australian School of Art (2002-2004), and a Masters (Fine Art) at the Chelsea College of Art and Design, London (2006). He has exhibited widely in Australia and Europe, served as Guest Professor at the University of Fine Arts, Berlin (2011), and has held teaching positions at Adelaide Central School of Art (1999-2004, 2017-2020) and the University of South Australia, where he has worked as a lecturer in Contemporary Art since 2018.
