For the past 30 years, the work of prominent artist and activist Moelyono has focused on advocacy for marginalised individuals and communities living in Indonesia.
His 2017 exhibition Amok Tanah Jawa (Battle for Land in Java) held in Yogyakarta marked an important shift in his practice combining both performance and painting. Drawing on four iconic paintings from Indonesia’s colonial past, Moelyono reinterpreted the works through a contemporary lens to create a multi-layered commentary on social, artistic, political and economic life in Indonesia today.
Flinders University will present works from the exhibition as part of a live studio installation and week-long residency program. Visitors are invited to meet the artist and view works on display and in progress.
