Research interests

Dr van den Akker is currently employed as a Lead Wastewater Research Scientist within the Research and Expertise division of SA Water. In this role Dr van den Akker is responsible for providing analytical and research support for SA Water and the broader water industry within Australia. His core research interests and expertise are in urban water systems (wastewater treatment, water recycling, water quality), environmental microbiology and microbial ecology, and quantitative microbial risk assessment. In particular Dr van den Akker's research focuses on enhancing the environmental performance of wastewater treatment by reducing energy requirements and greenhouse gas emissions, and maximising energy recovery. His research also seeks to improve the public health performance of water reuse schemes.
