Dr. Darling Rojas-Canales is a Medical Scientist in the Renal Unit at Flinders Medical Centre and holds Full Academic Status at Flinders University. Her current research focuses on kidney-related pathologies, particularly on understanding the pathways that promote renal growth in diabetic kidney disease. Other areas of interest include kidney immunology, Type 1 diabetes, and kidney cancer.
Dr. Rojas-Canales manages the Flinders Renal Laboratory — a joint initiative between Flinders University and the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network — providing strong links between research and clinical practice. She has a background in islet transplantation and transplant immunology, having completed her PhD at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and postdoctoral training at the University of Pittsburgh.
The Flinders Renal Laboratory is located within the Health and Medical Research Building (Level 6) and has access to flow cytometry, tissue culture facilities, immune assays, microscopy, and established models of diabetes and kidney nephrectomy. In addition to her research role, Dr. Rojas-Canales supervises Honours, Masters, and PhD students.
