I completed my B.Sc. (Hons.) in the School of Biological Sciences at Flinders University and my PhD. in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Adelaide University under the guidance of Prof Paul Manning and A/Prof Renato Morona. I undertook postdoctoral training with Prof Joseph Lam at the University of Guelph in Canada.

I returned to Flinders University in 2006. My main interests are within the fields of Microbiology and Molecular Biosciences, in particular the laboratory experience. I am an education focussed technician, passionate about student engagement and learning. My main role is a Senior Technician in the Multipurpose Teaching Facility (College of Medicine and Public Health) in the Flinders Medical Centre. I am also based in the Biology Discovery Centre, in the College of Science and Engineering.

Key responsibilities

Tasks not limited to:

  • Managing the operations within the Multipurpose Teaching Facility (MTF) including the development of protocols, trialling, setting up and dismantling of comples specialise practical teaching.
  • Coordinating, producing and maintaining the histology, histochemistry, immunochemistry and pathology teaching slide boxes of tissue samples. Keeping accurate records of all materials including source, provenance and storage.
  • Ensuring appropriate ethical and privacy standards are applied to the care, recording and display of all specimens.
  • Proactively supporting academics across all functions of the MTF.
  • Ensuring microscopes and wet laboratory equipment is maintained and functional.
  • Maintaining a register of consumables, equipment and ordering resources as required.
  • Managing Work Health and Safety within the MTF, including inductions, equipment, chemicals and hazard management.
  • Managing the financial performance of the MTF.
  • Managing and maintaing the technical requirements of topics scheduled into the MTF and BDC as required.
Teaching interests

I am passionate about the scholarship of learning and teaching and my interest involves actively engaging students in the learning experience. My main focus is the laboratory environment, including the development of student skills, inquiry-based practicals and data presentation.

I teach in the topics BIOL2702: Genetics, Evolution and Biodiversity, BIOL2771: Biochemistry, BIOL2772: Molecular Biology, BIOL3761: Foundations in Microbiology, and BIOL3782: Advanced Microbiology, Microbial Ecology and Infectious Disease.

I also support academics in their teaching, particularly those is the College of Science and Engineering, through my role in the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching.
