Dr Lemma Bulto is a Research Fellow at the CFI and a Senior Researcher at the Heart Foundation. He completed his PhD at the University of Adelaide, where he was awarded the Doctoral Research Medal and the Dean’s Commendation for Doctoral Thesis Excellence in recognition of the outstanding quality and impact of his thesis. Following this, he undertook a postdoctoral fellowship at Flinders University, where he received the Vice-President and Executive Dean Award (2023) and the Vice-Chancellor’s Early Career Researcher Award (2024). In 2025, he was recognised among the world’s top 2% of scientists in the global ranking published by Stanford University.

Dr Bulto has published more than 65 peer-reviewed articles, with the majority produced following completion of his PhD. Since that time, he has generated over 30 research outputs, including more than 10 first-author publications. His work demonstrates high scholarly impact, reflected in a Scopus Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) of 8.58. His research has informed national and international policy and practice guidelines, including those developed by the World Health Organization.

His research program focuses on evidence-based cardiovascular disease prevention, particularly the development, evaluation, and implementation of innovative prevention strategies and models of care to reduce cardiovascular risk and health disparities. His methodological expertise includes systematic reviews and intervention reviews, application of the GRADE approach to assess certainty of evidence, and clinical guideline development. He is a certified guideline methodologist (McMaster University, Canada), with expertise in applying the GRADE framework and Evidence-to-Decision processes to develop transparent, trustworthy recommendations. He also conducts systematic reviews in accordance with Cochrane methodological standards to inform evidence-based guideline recommendations.

Since 2023, Dr Bulto has served on the South Australia Cardiovascular Research Network (SA CVRN) Rising Stars Working Group, contributing to strategic initiatives supporting emerging cardiovascular researchers.
